My new to me Yamaha 2011 VF225LA idles at 900rpm and bangs into gear. Surely that not correct to be idling that high. Also how do you lower the idle if nessary. I'm looking for the guy that knows how to make changes at home without running it to the shop for minor corrections. If your out there please help me with this little problem. Let me know what your SAME engine idles at please.

If I’m not mistaken, any change made to idle speed must also have the Idle Speed Control solenoid reprogrammed to go along with it, or the ISC will simply try to correct the idle and cause a code. These Yamaha four strokes are a thing of beauty, but they are finicky little turds too. It ain’t like a Holley carburetor for sure.

The motor should start off in high idle, then slow down the rpms a little a few seconds after the initial firing.
I’d bet you have an ISC solenoid on its way out.

Ck. under cowl and see if carb linkage is against the throttle stop.

Do you have a hot foot throttle installed?

Correct idle is 750 RPM +/- 50 RPM

I look into the cost of a new ISC and the price will get your attention. Does the ISC control high idle on a cold start too? My Yamaha doesn’t do a high idle then drop back to normal idle. It’s got one speed high. On a lot of cars you can clean the gunk out of your ISC with carb cleaner. If you change the ISC out on a Yamaha is there any reprogramming that is required are just swap it and your good?
