Wonder how many fishing boats are gonna head out to the Nansen rig now?

That is a big fish. Seven hours is a long time in a chair.

That is awesome! Great to see a fish like that. It seems to me that one that big hopefully means that there is a somewhat healthy population, which should mean... more bluefin.

They just spawn in the Gulf, they don't live there. BTW, it's against the law to target them. By catch is OK as long as there is any poundage left for that size bluefin.

Interesting, I didn't know was against the law. It's because they're endangered, correct?
What do you mean by "OK as long as there is any poundage left for that size bluefin?" Does that mean, if the fish is over a certain size weight, the by catch is ok, but if it is under, it is not?
Thanks.

Thanks. There's a specific weight quota allowed for fish that are caught incidentally. You're not supposed to target them. The fishermen who caught this one had caught a blackfin for "marlin fishing" and hooked the tuna instead. Impressive catch...they spawn in the gulf...that's why they're protected here. Someone out of Pensacola and someone in Port A caught big ones the same week. I had a friend fishing with a 50 wide a few years ago that had caught a blackfin on a chunk and had a bluefin swallow it and spooled him. He got it to the boat early and it just dumped 500 plus yards of 80lb mono.
