But not forever. I use 20 lb suffix , a bead , a swivel and a mono leader. Last trip I broke off two lines above the swivel,,

I examined the braid, it was worn out, color gone , and fuzzy. So this evening, I cut each line back about 20 ft, Good color, line in great shape.
( 6 jig rods , 2 minnow rods). All set for a trip tomorrow.
I think the line has lasted at least 5 years. I ordered fresh braid today, but don’t think I will have to replace any righ5 away.

Will see how it goes..

Good luck
Mo

Standing Timber is hard on braid. I peel about 20 ft of a couple times a year exactly as you described. If I fish brush piles I don’t ever have to mess with it but the limbs on vertical timber seem to eat braid up.

Mo, do you leave your rods in the boat. I do and I change line about once a year. I use PowerPro Super8Slick. I quit using the mono leader as I noticed no significant reason for it. Catch rate was the same with and without. I usually lose about 6-12” of line a trip due to changing jigs so the knot doesn’t stay on long enough to fray. The weathering of the line is why I change.

Rods live in the. boathouse. The main reason I use a leader is so I can use a loop knot.
The bead and swivel also keep the grand kids from reeling a fish all the way to the rod tip.

I like the visibility of the swivel on live scope. Lots of time I will fish the jig down in the brushpile, with just the swivel showing,
I have seen the swivel move laterally, never feeling the bite, Caught some big ones this way.

Good luck.
Mo

I tie a loop knot with my braid with no issues. It is nice to have the other echo with Livescope.

Thinking about changing a couple of jigging rods over to braid and using a fluorocarbon leader. Any suggestion for line weight for both the braid and fluorocarbon? All I ever used is mono, so I though I'd try something different.

I’ve been using 15lb braid but I’m going up to 20 or 30lb when this spool is gone. Problems with line slipping through the gap in the eye of the hook. I refuse to use fluorocarbon line. Just to brittle for my liking. JMO, others swear by it. I changed to braid about 5 years ago and was using a leader. I was new to fishing brush and was losing a lot of jigs. So I quit using a leader and didn’t notice any difference in catch rates. So no longer use one. I’m much better at fishing brush now and could get away with a leader but I’m just not convinced it makes that much difference. I will recommend using Power Pro Super8Slick. It has a smooth finish and comes of the reel well. These are only my opinions and your results may very. Good luck with whatever you decide.

The braid craze for me is when a Crappie breathes on my jig I feel it.

And when I set the hook it sets instead of mono which to me feels like I'm fishing with a rubber band.

I have a love/hate relationship with braid. I like all the good points mentioned above but getting wind nests at the tip drives me nuts. I use 10-14ft rods so it is a pain at times. I sometimes use a leader when I see crappie and they won't bite. Then I add some floro but I would rather not, except for pre-made leaders for tournaments.

Besides cutting some line off the front end, here are some ways to preserve your braid.

1. Each year, reverse the braid on the reel by: a.) tie the tag end to a fence post (or whatever), pace it off and tie to another fence post. Then go to the beginning fence and tie it on your reel and wind the braid to the other end, viola, you have new line basically; or, b.) if you have two empty line spools, spool the line onto it, then respool it onto the 2nd empty spool to reverse it, then spool onto the reel to complete the reversal process. Six months is better than a year as it will last longer over the long haul.

2.Take your reel (no more than two) with line on it to that nice guy in fishing at Cabela's in Allen laugh and he will reverse it for you in-between customers, free.

I recommend PowerPro (V2 is great too), Suffix 832 or Yozuri. I like 30lbs as it is 8lb mono in diameter.

I also don't fill the spool with 100% braid. There are tons of mono spools stored in my basement and the only thing they're good for is filling the reel 3/4 full and then adding braid. The only reason I have to add new braid is when the length is reduced by more than 10' after breaking off from deep snags. Usually the light jig hook straightens out after which I re-bend it.

As was mentioned above by HOGON, sensitivity is good especially if there's no line bow from the wind - something any lines suffer. Zero stretch = faster hook sets by panicking fish.

Kastking on Ebay is the cheapest by far, lasts forever and has done well for me using 8# /2 diam, which is another amazing attribute : using small diameter line for better lure action yet not sacrificing line strength. This also allows you to cast very light lures long distances vs mono. which slaps against rod guides as it leaves the reel spool.

I sometimes use a fluorocarbon leader under a float to keep light lures at the right depth when pulling it along.

(BTW, you never have to cut much braid off - especially not 20' !)
