Right after I got my bass boat, I took my neighbor up to lake Lanier, After fishing a while I sat down to fire up the boat to move and it wouldn’t start, kept trying and it wouldn’t fire. Got disgusted and dropped the trolling motor a found a launch around the bend. Tied up and called the wife, about an hour away. She had to load up our new baby and find this ramp so I could drive about 10 miles to get the trailer. I swear as soon as she pulled up I looked down and noticed the kill switch was in the down position. I flipped it up, turned the key and the motor fired right up. I waved her off and went back to fishing (OT hard), she was understandably wizzed at me for a few days, and we didn’t catch anything. That was a major kill switch lesson, fortunately I never forgot the plug

My fishing buddy used to have a Ranger that would not start without a kill switch. It went overboard once when he slung his life jacket behind him on the deck. We had to get creative to bypass it to get the boat running. My Triton has a spring loaded type switch on the ignition. You depress this to install the kill switch yoke. When pulled it lets the key spring load off. BUT, if you don't want to use it, you can just remove the kill switch yoke and start it up. Runs fine without it. I do use it when on plane. Running at 50 or 60 mph, I think it would be good if I flew out of the boat hitting some wakeboat wave. I also have a hot foot spring loaded as you know. If I flew out, seems like the hot foot would spring back to idle. I do know someone from Virginia that was boating with a high school classmate years ago in chesapeake bay and he fell out when running. The boat circled around at full throttle and eventually he took a prop to the head and it killed him.

If you have a kill switch and you just do not want to use it but still want to be legal, just un-equip your boat from having one and you're good to go.

I feel like I have better control. More than that, though, I view them as a safety feature and appreciate them for just the reason you described.

Even at idle, it's moving faster than most can swim.
