Though I haven’t used it since maybe 1960, I have my grandfather’s reel (and segmented metal rod). The reel is a #1962 Shakespeare Level Wind Kalamazoo, made in 1918. I remember catching a few bass on it when I was a kid. The reel still has black braid on it, and I have no idea how old the line is.

Sooo, my question is: should I just leave it in the original little flannel sack, or should I clean it up, put new line on it and try to fish with it. What would you do?

Put it in a nice shadow box, and display it in a nice place....

I’ll leave it alone. Even the braid he used is still in the reel. The braid is black.

I believe I have one of those reels, or something very similar.

I need to check.
