Had some crazy schooling action at about 8am this morning.... Every cast you could catch one if you can reach them, but a lot of them were small. @CSSOURCE I fish about 3/4 of a mile down the bank at big creek if you go left of the marina... I'm sure you don't have to go that far but I try to get away from people. Unfortunately I'm always surrounded by boats even though I walk all the way down there. Caught a ton this morning, but threw em back because I don't have any room left in the freezer haha

Fished the big creek area this past Friday morning. I got on the water too late (7:00 am) and I could only manage a couple of stragglers. After that it was black bass and sunfish. I heard from another fisherman later in the day that the white bass were boiling around 6:00 am.

It was a different world when we were boys and girls....

From all signs it looks like the shad spawn is just about over. I haven't seen many shad on the shoreline the last couple of trips.

The bluegill are slowly moving shallow. I've been catching a few but the numbers still haven't arrived yet. Only bluegill too. The greenies and long ear have not shown up shallow.

Can anyone speak on the pattern (months) of the bluegill spawning shallow on Lake Somerville? I'm really interested in their behavior.

The bluegill will usually spawn at least a couple times of year. They start moving shallow in late May and at least a portion of them will stay shallow until early November. The best places to find them are around the rock outcroppings on the lake. Somerville has a fairly large population of bluegill but they are small compared to places like Fayette and Conroe. I've caught very few over 0.5 lbs.

Somerville has a decent sized population of long ear sunfish, very few red ear, green sunfish or warmouth. There are no redbreast in Lake Somerville.

Large numbers of bluegill should start showing up shallow in the next couple of weeks. The long ear should start showing up shallow as well.

Yea the shad spawn seems to be over unfortunately....I'm glad i took advantage of it while it happened. I just wish i could catch some more big hybrids! I only got 1 big hybrid so far this year around 5lbs. Time to get back to largemouth bass fishing. I wish i had a boat!

i went last sunday and got there too late (around 7:30am) and there were no smaller shad to be found. I waded out a ways and caught about 10 shad in one throw but they were giant shad....they tend to not eat those.

A break in the usual sticky hot weather spurred on by the tropical depression occurred as the rain pushed east.
The west side of the tropical depression draws air down from the north and sometimes brings a day or two of dry cool air with it.
That was the case for Wednesday and Thursday morning as J-Moe and I took full advantage of all 65 degrees to fish lake Somerville at daybreak.

I drove over to Irwin Bridge this week. The water was slightly above normal and stained.

I drove over the CR 125 crossings at Nails Creek and Cedar Creek. The big log jams by the bridges have been removed.
