So I finally took my inflatable out to Canyon lake. I had only been there once or twice before and didn't fish, so it was pretty new to me. Went to the free Overlook park. Google said they open at 8 but the gate was open at 7:45 with a sign that said they open at 7, though it probably wouldn't have made a difference. The path down to the lake is more like a game trail and it's steep and rocky, so be warned. Also the rock ledges on the shore are very slippery.
Anyways I got in my little Advanced Elements and went South for about half a mile (away from the Dam). The lake here is deep (for Texas) and rocky mainly, with many rock ledges under the surface that should be hiding fish under them. I didn't see or hear of anyone there catching anything today. Luckily, I caught 4 or 5 sunfish, trolling a Panther Martin holographic spinner of all things. That's not normally a fish you catch trolling, but at least I didn't get skunked. Took a swim before leaving and it was great. As I was driving out around 10:50 it was turning into a zoo wit cars all along the road, so I left just in time.
Will load pics later.

Next time you go look at some of the other boat launches scattered around the lake which are free, and a lot easier to access the water. Ramps #1 #2 #5 #8 #6 #7 on the south side of the lake. just to name a few. Plenty more on the north side and upper lake area. All easy access. The park you went to is more of a scenic overlook and very steep walk to the water. Ramp #11 on the far upper end of the lake which is actually a few miles up the river is popular with kayakers.
Just one more cast!

I can live with the climb, but fishing was terrible. It looks like it would be good pre-spawn territory maybe, unless it's too deep. I am not a bass expert.

Canyon can be a tough nut to crack but once you figure it out, you can do fairly good. There are some nice smallmouth bass that like to hang along those deeper rocky ledges as well. Ramp #1 area is a good place to look for them as well with similar structure.

I lived on Canyon through the 80's and early 90's. We loved to always snorkel and scuba along those rocks and explore the caverns under them. Some LARGE catfish and bass lurk under there to feed on the brim the current would suck in to there. Never had much luck catching anything fishing there. If you are wanting to just fish the lake, some of the areas as mentioned above are good. I had great luck around Rebecca Creek. A better option in your inflatable would be the river below the lake.
