Had the first glimpse of the full on shad spawn the other day. There were sandies boiling everywhere but did not see many bass crashin. Fished all throughout the stuff that usually gets em in the boat and could not buy a bite. Wondering if maybe the fish were so gorged they didn't want lures? any one else ever had a problem like that?

Sometimes there's just no bass there.

I hate photobucket.

Allot more Shad than Bass so sometimes it’s just Shad.

I was on a windy point at Ray Bob last weekend and the shad were so thick I kept snagging them on my crank bait. The drum were thick on the bank We caught a bunch of white and black bass using crank baits (KVD 1.5 Sexy Shad) but couldn't buy a bite with a Fluke. That was one of the best days fishing I've had in a long time. We went back the next day hoping to repeat and didn't graph or see a fish anywhere in the area.

Try down sizing when this happens. More often than not the fish are so keyed in on the shad that too big of a lure will never get bit. I like a 1 or 1.5 square bill for this very reason when the bass are busting the shad at the surface.

A couple days ago on the Brazos above Whitney there was what appeared a Shad spawn going on. I caught small sandies and small stripers for over an hour. As said above when fish are schooling in open(deeper) water often dropping a lure below the School will get you the larger bite. As also said above sometimes the only species is white bass. No black bass home! For me the other day dropping below the school was not really an option because the shad were all in only a few feet of water. I threw a 1.5 squarebill and just enjoyed the hour. Then bam! One single black bass joined the party. Nice fat 5 pounder. [Linked Image]

I use a blade bait and they seem to like it. The whites LOVE it

When I am not fishing I am thinking about fishing. And mostly what I should have done differently my last trip!

Try the complete opposite of this....Had incredible success with LARGE swimbaits 2X the shad they are chasing. And retrieving fast with erratic jerks and pauses. Downsizing does work for sure but creating something much different in the frenzy has helped over the years....
