I have two boats with older outboard engines, 1997 115 HP Johnson and a 2000 115 HP Mercury both run good but idle a little rough . I have been wondering about running Sea foam for a couple of tanks to help keep the engine clean.
Anyone use sea foam? Does it help ?

I can only give you my experience. I ran it in a 1983 150 Merc for 8 years and never had an issue with the motor. I put a little in each tank that I filled.

Smooth move
I purchased the 1997 115HP Johnson new. I had it overhauled once about 10 years ago. it starts and runs great a little smoke and rough when first starts. The 2000 115 HP Mercury I purchased a few years ago from a friend for my pontoon boat. The motor also starts right up, but it shakes and is a little noisier than the Johnson at idle and low speed. At high speed it runs well. The Johnson is smoother / quieter If I had to choose right now it would be the Johnson as the better motor.

thanks for the feed back on fuel additives.

been using seafoam for over 10 yrs now, great stuff, also a preservative for storage.

decarb both engines, 2 cans seafoam in 3 gals fuel and run on muffs (DO NOT do this over concrete, the stain will not come out) till operating temp then idle for about 3-4 mins. and shut off. let it sit for a few hrs. then repeat. take it to the lake and run it for 15-30 mins. idle to wot and you're done.
use a can of seafoam to 15 gals. gas and your good from then on out.

both engines will run smoother, idle a lot better and power should improve some. blows out all the carbon and frees up rings. run full synthetic or at least a synthetic blend helps a lot too.

I will add, I run seafoam in all my engines, gas and diesel and not a single problem from any due to fuel issues.

they now have outboard/marine specific out as well, 20 oz. instead of 16 and specific for marine apps. about 10.00 a can at wal mart

If I use ethanol free fuel do I need any additives? Yamaha VMax OX66. 2002 model. Use it once a week at least.

I would not think so. You can't find real gas in the metro areas like DFW.

If you use it that often you should be fine as far as the ethanol is concerned. It has a short shelf life and causes problems like condensation if stored a long time. I do recommend the other additives however for cleaning the carbon and keeping the rings free. Yamaha Ring Free is good...

I had the same motor-2002 VMax 150HP........used Ring Free every month (about a third of a bottle each time and it's not cheap) as well as only Yamalube for the oil. Again, not the cheapest options BUT that motor treated me VERY well for 18 years. Was running perfectly when I sold it this year.

Murphy Mart in Rockwall has it but a lot of people don't consider Rockwall a metro area. I run it in boat and all other 2 cycle motors. Nice thing about boat is it has a 95 gallon tank and the Optimax sips gas. I usually put 40 to 50 gallons in when I do.

I would suggest doing the decarb first, you will be amazed at how much better they will run when things are freed up.
