I am hopelessly addicted to topwater fishing ... been bank fishing a few different spots this spring with a variety of baits of the Pop-R type. Was on a pretty good string of landing maybe 2/3 of my bites but in the last couple of trips I am 0 for my last 8. These are good, aggressive bites and the hooks are sharp. What's your ratio of topwater bites to hook ups?

Happens lots of times. Back your top water strikes up with a tiny pinch weighted Fluke.

They are just missing the bait. It's not you doing something wrong. Either fire right back with the same bait or follow up with something not on top. I prefer to do that with a small swim bait, fluke or similar.

-Steve I imagine you're already doing this but make certain to count to at least 2 before setting the hook on a topwater fish. Oftentimes a softer action rod and a less violent hookset will result in better hookups. I recommend having a weightless Senko on a rod nearby whenever topwater fishing to cast out directly at where any missed hookups occur with a topwater lure as more often than not this will catch that fish if you can make an extremely accurate cast quickly after missing them on top. I hope this helps, good luck!

I missed a BUNCH fishing overtop of salvania that wasn't super thick. Heck they'd hit a bait several times and I never got em. But the 1 that Wanted it got it good and I set the hook almost immediately and didn't miss! Just keep at it.

Well guys I decided to up the ante and start throwing a frog. 0 for 5 the last 2 trips but these are better quality fish for sure. Have gotten a good look at a couple and they are more in the 3-4 range compared to the 1-2 pound fish I've been catching/not catching on the Pop-R.

Don't set the hook on a pop'r or walking bait. Just keep chugging it until the fish takes it down and reel down on it. In many cases they will hit at it 2-3 times before they actually take it down so if you set the hook on the first or second hit you will jerk it away from the fish. It's way easier said than done. About 3 weeks ago during the shad spawn I had one hit 3 times real quick at a giant walking bait so thought it was a white bass. I just kept chugging along and on the 4th hit she took it down. I was really surprised how big it was on her first jump and she ended up over 7 lbs.

I had a perfect storm kinda day to learn from an expert on a day the big ones were all over topwater. I finally got some discipline to ignore the strikes and just keep going. It gets exciting when big fish blow up over and over on a bait before they finally connect!

Discipline required. Remember the old saying "Work the bait till you feel the weight". My heaviest bass nipped at my topwater 3 times before she took it.

I’m glad I’m not alone. I’m not getting nearly the number of strikes on buzzbaits or frogs as I normally get this time of year, and the number of true strikes has been abysmal.
On buzzbaits, I’ve mostly gotten the slurp bite, which is lazy and hard to connect on. Another good fish missed it and, on the frog, I’ve had one good blow up and the fish missed it.
Been a weird spring.
