I fish with Berkley big game or pro spec monofilament most of the time, in 20 or 25 pound test. This is overkill for 10 pound cats, but you never know when a 30 pounder may come along.

It really depends on what kind of fishing your doing. I use 30 lb big game in solar collector green for Blues year round and been using big game for 30+yrs for all species. There might be a better line out there but I stick with what works for me. We catch mostly 2 lb fish this time of year but in the event you hang a 70 lbr you’ll sure be glad you have it. Several reasons I still use Big Game are #1 it’s cheap. #2 its strong enough to tow my 23ft boat. #3 is when the green solar collector color starts to fade and get dull it’s time to re-spoil so you never have old brittle line on. Haven’t lost a fish to line breaking in years and we put our fair share of fish in the boat. I spool a ton of reels so I buy the 3 lb rolls of Big Game for $100 which will last me over 2 yrs. Some guys say it has too much line memory but I’ve never had that issue cuz we keep it stretch out on fish. Type of line isn’t that important for 2 lbrs unless your fishing strait down for channel cats in deeper water or your in heavy timber. You need braid to detect those little peckers.

There is a fine line between fishing and floating around like an idiot!!

Pretty much told you every thing you need to know. The only difference is if I’m fishing somewhere that I know doesn’t have trophy fish, I like 17lb.

Really good information from everyone... Thanks. I guess I need to get off my rear and go to Academy or Walmart to pick out new line.

I use power pro braid 40lb test. I fish lots of timber at lake fork so I want to pull some fish out. Power pro braid has performed the best of the braids I have used. I did try some Chinese stuff from online and it would break easily.

Lake Fork is a totally different beast and agree that Power Pro braid is a must. Anywhere else I use mono Big Game 25lbs.

I switched over to braid several years ago from Big Game.
Nothing wrong with the Big Game and I probably still have one reel still spooled with it in 20#.
I just like braid though it took me a little while to get the hang of it, but I find it more forgiving (line twist) and super sensitive if a fish just breathes on the bait.
A rod with good backbone is a must, as there is no line stretch.
I use 30# braid with a 15# mono leader.

My setup will catch eaters or a 20+ and last weekend I must have caught about 30 10 inchers, and couldn't keep them off my bait even moving around.

20LB Big Game for punch bait rods or "channel cat rods"

25LB Offshore Angler for everything else.

Just don't get the super cheap stuff and you'll be fine.

PB flathead 34.5 lbs - I know it's small but it was still the record for Lake Travis when I caught it!
PB Blue 58.5 lbs jugline 43.5 lbs on R&R which was the other Lake Travis record when caught.
