I am curious what method you guys use this time of year and into the summer when targeting big catfish. Suspended off the bottom in the channel, or on the bottom on the flats/shallows, preferred cut bait, etc? I had good luck catching some big fish in the winter and I can go catch some eaters right now without much problem (30' of water off the break of the channel with carolina rigged small cut bait), but I don't know what I should be do during warmer weather to target larger catfish. I'd prefer to fish during the day because I don't see very well at night.
Just a note on how I caught several good fish this winter (because it was an entirely new method for me). I sat directly over the channel and looked until I saw what appeared to be large catfish on my down imaging. I would tight line cut bait barely off the bottom and then hookset for all I was worth after a couple of bumps. This is way different than what I have done in the past in regard to letting them slowly take it. I had to set the hook early because they kept mouthing the bait and then dropping it.

Flatheads are the name of the game right now if you want to fish for big fish. Big live baits, carp, buffalo, bluegill, drum, bullheads, and big gizzard Shad are all good options. Fishing near cover at night.

I use the 50 to 1 method this time of year. For every 50 dinks we catch we land a good one. Big Blues are headed to spawn and become very difficult to target this time of year. Once they come off their beds we catch a few at night. We start catching them more frequently in September when the rains start and by October weโre usually catching big fish.

If you are targeting big Yellows, May is a prime month for them. I suggest using my Catfish Calendar, as to what days/nights to target them. Big perch will suffice.
Good Luck!
