We were wade fishing this morning at Lavon when a guy in a kayak turtled about 100 yards off shore. He tried a few times to get back in but could not make it. Two other guys in kayaks went out and towed his kayak back to shallow water, so everyone was OK. He had a life jacket and the water is 74* so he was probably never in any danger. I don't know if he lost any stuff or not.

Moral is: Find out before you are in a jam if you can get back into your kayak or not. It is not that easy if you are older. I am 73 and took my kayak out in water just over my head and practiced getting back in. Doable, but not easy. If the weather got sketchy and the kayak was bobbing around in wind, I am not sure I could do it, so I am very careful of the weather and other conditions and I don't go out when the water temp is very cold.

I'm 47 and my rule of thumb is if its blowing more than 10 or 12 on those big lakes I leave the yak at home especially if you couple the wind with weekend water skiing yahoos.

My limit is 12mph. Have not come close to turtling the kayak but did get caught when winds came up suddenly and could not make it back to my put in location.
Fortunately was able to get to shore within the park.
I also stay closer to shore when winds are over 10mph.
