What do you use in late spring early summer? We have not had much luck with minnows, but jigs are working ok. Dark bodies such as black, red, or blue with a chartreuse tail.

I rarely use jigs without a berkley crappie nibble. some swear by them or other scents, slab sauce, etc...
i also often use minnows on pink jigheads.

Jigs, size varies depending on the depth of the fish, always with a Berkley crappie nibble or slab sauce.

The wife and I fished yesterday and had a pretty good catch on Navarro Mills. Started out me using Minnows and her using a pink headed jig with a minnow-like tube and a yellow niblet. We both caught a couple, but it was slow. Relocated to another spot and did best with a jig like hers. Caught a few more. Relocated again and caught nothing on the jigs. I pulled off the tube and hooked a minnow to the pink headed jig and the crappie went wild. Caught some big ones. Then they quit biting and we left. It was a good day, but not a great day, but the wife had fun. That makes it a success, and even better is that she is pushing me hard for a spot lock trolling motor and she wants livescope for bow and console. Could it get better than that?

May is a good month to catch a lot of crappie. The Spawn is over, Crappie may not be as fat as they were earlier and some may be kinda beat up from the Spawn. But they will for the most part be at a consistent depth. For me last time that was 10' to 13'.
Crappie fishing is all about moving until you find Crappie big enough to keep. I usually have 4 or 5 places I want to fish when I get to the lake. I'll fish each spot for 20 minutes and make adjustments to locate the depth the fish are at.
After 10 minutes I will think, have I caught any keepers? Then move shallower or deeper.
But don't be scared to move until you find the size Crappie you are looking for.
If you don't know 5 places, think about making a brush pile or two and putting it out.
