What kind of duck is this? I have been on Lake Conroe over forty years and this year is the first time I have seen this kind.

It took some looking but I think it is an Egyptian Goose. Native to sub-Saharan Africa, the Egyptian Goose is an exotic species in North America. Their introduction and establishment is not well understood, but the species likely originated from escapees from captive waterfowl collections.

I always have my camera on deck and the last two trips to Conroe I have seen them. There are two that hang out at the ramp where I launch and today there were three at the Palms Marina. They are not shy about coming up to your boat.

You are correct. It is an Egyptian Goose.

Cool pic by the way. Always wanted to take my camera out there and get some pics of them but never remember to bring it.

Egyptian Geese (Alopochen aegyptiaca) have become well established in Texas. The first one I documented was in 2011 but there are big flocks of them now in different areas around the state. They are spectacular and easily identified in the air by the big white covert wing patch. Great picture.

Egyptian goose. We’ve had three of the noisy things on our canal for weeks.

Looks delicious. As an invasive species there shouldn't be a season or limit on them; looks like thanksgiving or christmas dinner.

Need a goose cook.
