Received my next's month cable bill on 23 April. Bill due date 5 May. Cancelled service on 25 April to go with Grande Communications.

Returned all Spectrum equipment to store on 28 April. Got equipment bill yesterday for $489.00.

Called Spectrum and lady checked and said yes I show all your equipment was returned, but you do owe the $ 157.00 monthly cable bill.

Well, we had a long discussion about why would I pay $157.00 for a service I cancelled, don't have and don't want. She says that since my subscription billing cycle began on 21 April that I owe the money and they do not pro rate from the time of cancellation. Said company made that policy decision last June. Spoke to supervisor and heard same spiel.

This just seems way wrong to me. splat

Open to suggestions/advice.

They've been ripping people off a lot longer and have a whole lot of practice with it. Just pay it unless you're really, really good at negotiations.

File a complaint with The Public Utilities Commission.

Don't pay it and take the hit to your Credit rating.

Get higher up the chain. Someone isn't paying attention. Start working with them in writing rather than voice conversations.
Very likely that if you were to pay it, you'll get a refund for the pro-rated amount in the future.

I deal with all of them and honestly, they're all the same.
You wouldn't even believe what I'm going through with CenturyLink right now if I told you.

I still have my spectrum cable modem. It is the 4th or 5th modem we had in our 4 months of spectrum hell. I scheduled a cancellation with them 3 weeks in advance because FIOS couldn't get me connected quickly. I paid upfront and verified they were not billing me any more. I told the lady on the phone I would drop their equipment off at the contractor hub. She said I could not. I told her I would leave the modem on the porch and they could come get it and that was my final offer. It was their equipment and their responsibility.

Woke up this morning

Does your city have a franchise agreement with Spectrum? You might see if you can go through the city to track it down and see if that's allowed.

Cable companies pull that kind of stuff all the time knowing most people don't even know franchise agreements exist, and the city doesn't find out they're out of compliance unless someone makes a complaint.

If an agreement exists and doesn't cover your situation, you can at least urge your city council members to insert a provision on renewal. You won't get your money back, but you can keep others from having to deal with the same issue.

If I am reading it correctly your due date for the disputed charge is June 5th. That should give you plenty of time to file a BBB complaint and get a resolution.

If you want wrong with Spectrum here is my tale. I verified with Spectrum that they provided my address with cable service so I signed up with them and had them send me the equipment. Got everything set up but could not get all channels to come in. After several calls found out Spectrum does not provide cable service to my neighborhood but does provide service in the neighborhood across the street that is 50 yards from my house.

Later in the month got a monthly bill from Spectrum and they tried using the same excuse but I finally kicked it far enough up the CSR ladder to reach a decision maker that saw the absurdity of trying to charge someone for a service they could not provide.

It is somewhat a conundrum to think that the BBB could now or ever has been able to resolve anything especially with a giant concern like Spectrum.
