with production shut down there would be no reason for a dealer to drop the price on a boat in inventory because of the uncertain time it would take to replace it. used boats wont change a lot because a lot of folks took the long payout on them they owe more than the market an most cant write a check to the lender to make up the difference to make it go away. This is exactly what a car dealer told me yesterday, they cant get more inventory so they arent budging on prices much.

You beat me to the punch Greg I think there will be some folks in the oil industry unloading boats here soon. The oil patch is in a bad way now and can’t see it improving until 2022. I would look here on the forum and west texas Craigslist ads. Depends what part of the oil business you are in, futures can dramatically up-tick over night with a shake up in the Persian Gulf. Now is the time buy and secure cheaper contracts, it will be back quicker than you think.

Not very many customers to sell to. Why do you think they are offering rebates discounts like we are seeing.?

I think new boats will start out with easy and long time low rate financing, like cars are doing now. Then factory layoffs, and shut downs, and more reduced selling prices. Also look for the market to get a lot of used boats for sale with take over payment prices if people dont get back to work soon. How do you think they have been selling these overpriced boats till present? Long term finance has been around since back in the eighties. It has gotten more ridiculous as of late with 15 year loans.

the cars an trucks have big rebates when was the last time you saw a dealer knock 15k off a boat not often the margins in new boats are not there for that kind of movement folks have to have cars an trucks not so much.

Used Boat market will get flooded and reduce prices for the next few years. New boats probably won't budge on prices. Sales will fall though.

Regarding the article Greg W posted which stated how many boat repos there are: How would you go about finding listings of repoed boats for sale?

The only ones who can’t afford to buy a boat during this Covid crisis are the same ones who couldn’t afford to buy one back February. Lol. Minimum wage employees and waitresses.

The big issue is people buy these boats they can’t afford. Finance them for years, owe more than what a new one cost 4 years down the road because of interest. Vehicles are the same. Buy what you can pay off in Three to four years. Now I know some folk like the new and shining rig. Willing to trade in every few years and don’t mind the note.. go for it!! I want to retire! I don’t make millions. I work for an honest living. I drive a payed off truck. Fish out of a great paid off boat. And can afford to fix the little things that happen. To each his or her own.. boats cost a pile! Up keep is the issue most over look. Yes with work and the economy slowing boats will hit the market! I’ll be fishing, only worried about gas oil, and lures.. +1

If the boat industry is like most industries then they usually only keep enough stock/raw materials/parts for only a few units of production. They use the just on time process with their stuff. Now with the price of oil waaay down and oil/natural gas being the base for fiberglass by all rights it should be some percentage cheaper to build a hull. I don't know the numbers but I bet people like Rick Pierce will know probably to the penny.

Not exactly sure how what I learned today factors into boat pricing. I called a boat repair guy that I know, to see if he’d install some stuff on my boat. He said the the Coronavirus has overworked him. He said that with baseball, soccer, football, basketball, dining out, and bar hopping being mostly shut down, it appeared to him that everybody is going fishing, or wants to. But...their boats need work now. He said that he’s overwhelmed and he’d be working like a crazy man till wintertime.
Does that mean that used boats will be in action and not for sale, or does it mean that all these newly repaired boats will eventually be up for sale when sports and such are back to full throttle?

Now, new cars may be a different story.
