It’s almost May, I guess that’s over for most of us.

We caught three crappie at Lavon yesterday about 15' down in 22' of water and all three were full of eggs. Spawn has been really crazy.

Currently Catching a mix of pre and post spawn fish. Water temps are still running 68-70 in the 3 lakes I fish so there’s still some left to spawn. Personally I’m alway glad when it’s over. Don’t care much for the inconsistency of the spawn months myself.

I caught crappie in 20 foot of water yesterday at Tawakoni. Most of them had eggs and all but one 6 incher was a black crappie.

I fished a lake yesterday for the first time and caught 20 on submerged standing timber. The fish were caught from water 14’ to 28’ deep. Nineteen white crappie and one black crappie. Sixteen of the twenty were dink’s, 8” to 9” long. I fished a main lake point and then all the way to back of a long arm of the lake. Never found any crappie grouped up, only scattered single fish. Crappie were super spooky. There were very few keeper crappie to be found. My guess is the bigger fish were shallower. I love fishing the deeper water so I never tried anything shallower than 14’. It was a catch and release day for me so it didn’t really matter. I was just glad to get out of the house. It was the first time I’ve been on the water in many weeks.

my observation from fishing Fork primarily and a trip to Hubbard along with talking to folks walking bank at golf course is the spawn is late this year. Normally on Hubbard the first 2 weeks of April are prime.

I had a couple of dozen blacks and a dozen whites at Lavon this weekend and they all looked very "post spawn ". It was the thinnest bunch of crappie I have handled in a couple of years. I was on the far north end of the lake and I realize it goes off earlier than the south end, but I was really surprised I didn't find any that still had some girth. They came at about 12' in 16' of water. I was surprised that in almost every school I caught one or two skinny 8" long channel cats. I had a hundred fish day including all the trash. I'll be heading back to the south end while the wind is down on Thursday.
