Most of my life I have thrown a 3/8 chartreuse willow leaf Spinnerbait as my go to lure choice. I’m curious when do you guys throw a spinnerbait and what determines the color? When do you throw willow leaf blades, Colorado blades And when do you throw an under spin?

If you are not deflecting off cover with a blade bait then you are doing it wrong. Start with a 1/2oz and bang it off everything you can to trigger a strike

Wow, I've got a spinnerbait tied on 24/7/365. Usually a chartreuse/white 3/8 oz. with double willows or tandem. If not that, then a tandem 3/8 in some shade of golden shiner. I seldom throw a colorado blade, preferring an indiana. I never throw an underspin as it's a completely different category than a spinnerbait. I've caught more DD fish on a spinnerbait than anything else.

63 and counting Frank, I'm curious as to why you ask?

Reason I ask is me and a younger friend we’re talking about how we rarely hear people talk about spinnerbaits anymore. It’s like they’ve gone away but we know they catch fish. Kind of forgotten by some. Thank you sir.

I see that on most of the bass fishing forums. The bladed jig seems to have taken the place of the spinnerbait in most people's arsenal. Spinnerbaits are nowhere near as generic as many folks think. I may go through dozens of them until I find one that really suits my fancy and catches fish. Most often the commercial lures have too large spinners and way too thick skirts. (IMHO) I recently had one of my old Nichols spinnerbaits break the wire in the R bend down on Choke Canyon and it's irreplaceable. That bait caught fish like no other I've ever thrown. I carry a 3700 series Plano box on my BassCat that has probably 75 skirts, more than 100 blades, spinnerbait frames from 1/4 oz. to 3/4 oz. and all the jewelry to build pretty much anything I can dream up. The spinnerbait never died, it was simply forgotten.

been bass fishing 45 years ---- didn't have ANY success with spinnerbaits the first 30 years . Granted , it wasn't a lure I would throw to much as I never had confidence in them .
That ended one day --- out of a little frustration and deciding to go to " one more spot " and see if I can get some more before I went home --- I ended up in a small cove with tons of subsurface weeds and an overall depth of about 5-10 feet . Caught 18 bass in about 45 minutes -- most were 2.5 to 3.5 lbs ---insane fun . The fish were so aggressive , that I sensed that they were attacking my blades , I must have missed 5-7 strong hits ( I use a trailer hook all the time now ) . Now I never go without a couple sizes and colors tied on and throw them all the time .
3/8oz , 1/2oz mostly and occasionally 3/4oz or even 1oz if the conditions are right . whites with different shades of color in the skirt . Willow leaf's 90% of the time , indiana blades 10% .
Strike King Premier Plus is my main spinnerbait .

Rick Clunn probably won more money than anyone while using a spinner bait.

I usually have best luck with spinnerbaits on wind blown shores or points. As in waves nearly coming over front of boat kinda wind. Recently started making my own but prior to that a stan sloan 5/8 zorro rattling tandem spinnerbait in white/chart. Was a killer. When its calm and clear tend to switch to a swim jig now.

I knew why you were asking FTT and I believe it's true. I'm 51 and the first artificial bait my dad tied on for me was an H&H spinnerbait when I was 3.

Chatterbait type swim jigs, underspins, swimbaits with small willowleaf blades tricking off the hook have all taken away attention from the basic single/double bladed spinnerbait.

I keep one tied on 24/7/365 too. Color & trailer color depends on water clarity. Blade selection depends on time of year. Blade color (gold or silver) depends on sunlight, light penetration, and water clarity. Muddy water/cloudy day = chartruese skirt with big gold colorado blades gives off more vibration and in any less murky pockets the fish can see it. Clear water = white skirt or white with gray with silver blades. Summertime 1 willowleaf and 1 smaller colorado blade. I am simply an amatuer who learned by trial and error (more error) and I still don't get it right. The expert on this is Don Harper.

Most years in early spring I have good success slow rolling a 3/4 oz chartruese and white with a #7 gold colorado blade and #2 silver indiana blade.

The bait is so versatile, can be fished at any speed and depth and can be thrown in cover with exception of thick grass. I saw a quote by Skeet Reese over the weekend that his Ranger rod locker can hold 27 combos. He misses the days when he only needed/carried 12-14 combos but the myriad of techniques warrants the diversity of combos rigged.

I think the spinnerbait gets passed over because of more 'sexy' techniques and fewer people are willing to learn how to fish it.

I grew up using H&H spinnerbaits. Caught a bazillion bass and White Perch (what we used to call em) on double spinner models with black and yellow skirts. Also used them with yellow skirts, white skirts, and black, but the black and yellow was the primo bass catcher.

I can still find H&H spinnerbaits, but the double spinner models aren’t easy to find. I need to try to order some and see if the magic is still, there.

Yep, I knew exactly why Frank was asking your age. I’m 50 and I throw both bladeed jig and spinners but I prefer SB and throw it 70% of the time, when Around that kind of cover.
Both of my boys were obsessed with bladed jigs ....they until they hammered them two days in a row on spinnerbaits in a high school deal and now one of their rods always has a spinnerbait on.
Funny thing was, they wouldn’t “eat” a chatterbait type bait, they would swipe at it. When they switched to double willow SB, they were attacking it and choking it
