Looking to buy two, spend 400 per kayak, 80% freshwater fishing 20 % recreational paddling, no rough water, what do y’all suggest

call it what you will...he is not definitely not anywhere near the top of the list for QB's that I would choose needing a FG or touchdown drive late in the game.

There are many used kayaks in that price range. A Perception Pescador 12 is good, My Grandson fishes out of a Ascend 12T and it's OK. 10' will be lighter to handle, especially if you don't have a truck and are car topping it.

Don't forget to budget for a comfortable PFD and a good paddle.

What is the height/approx weight of those who'll be primarily using the kayaks?
What is your hauling ability (truck, car topping, etc.)?

Truck with 10 foot utility trailer If needed, 6’ 200lbs, my other will be a 7th grader that is growing fast, he is 5’4 and will be 6’ by end of summer lol

If you can wait till memorial day, Dicks has a big sale on their kayaks, best prices next to Black Friday. You can get some in your price range. You will be able to get out on the water and get used to kayaking at a low price. After some time on the water, you will start to realize what is important to you and can factor that in when moving up to a better kayak.

Do think about weight of the kayak and its weight rating. Somme brands the weight rating is accurate and others it is not, do a search on here and you can find the information. If you have a hard time getting the kayak up into your truck or on the trailer you will not want to go out in it. If you and your gear overload the kayak, they will be less stable and much slower to paddle.
Think about how much gear you will be taking with you. tackle bag, cooler, anchor would be the high weight items.

For you I would think 10ft would be the minimum length and I would think 30" wide or more.

Having even a single rod holder would be very handy.

As said above, do not forget to figure in the price of a good pfd.
The NSR Chinook is a great choice and frequently described as the gold standard.
I do not even realize I have it on when moving around and it is not hot in the summer.
If you do not get the latest model you can save a good amount.
This would last you for many years.
Your son would probably outgrow whatever you get in the next couple years. Despite that, get him a good pfd, although you might want to sacrifice a bit in comfort there.

I recommend buying used if possible. You'll get a better kayak and more bang for your buck. For you I wouldn't go with anything under 12'. The longer length typically helps paddling and in theory tracking. The Pescador 12 can be found used online often for $400 and sometimes $300. It's a quality kayak that paddles and tracks well for a fishing kayak. The Field & Stream Eagle Talon 120 is another one that'd work for you. It is over $400 new but you can also find these used online often in the $400 range. For this one I would plan on getting a good seat cushion since the seat is the reason lots of folks are selling these. I use this cushion and love it! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013GPKFM8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

For your son the Heritage Angler 10 is a good option. Or If you can find a Wilderness Tarpon 100 used online within your budget I'd jump on it. Even an Emotion Stealth 11 would work great for your son.

Like with anything you get what you pay for. Many times I see folks buy a $300 "entry level" kayak from Academy then get frustrated and not use it because it's too hard to paddle or won't track straight and requires constant paddling on one side to keep it straight. If you can buy used and get a longer better built kayak you'll be happier in the long run.

Post here if you find one your not sure about. Someone will help you figure out if it will be good for you.

Old Town Trip 10 Angler is great kayak for both of you. Usually lists around $499 but can get it closer to $400 when Dicks has their sale.

The field & Stream Eagle Talon 120 has been part of the memorial day sale, may get for same price or less than a used one.

Realtively ight, but good weight capacity.
Very versatile and easy to modify.
It's a dry ride/you won't get your butt wet
Doesn't track well, but extremely stable (never turtled)
Still use it today on occasion.

For cheep good kayaks its hard to beat the ocean kayak scrambler, speck or frenzy. They can be purchased used for the 3 to 400 dollar range and the great thing about those is you can always sell them for what you give for them. They are always in demand among the land based shark fishermen.
