When using spinning gear for a Carolina rig, with braided line and a mono or fluora leader, do you see any advantage to using a size 4000 reel instead of a smaller reel such a 2500 size?

Aside from more capacity, I would think your retrieve rate per turn would be a little higher due to the larger spool.

With braid you won’t see much advantage.

4000 size spinning reels are heavy and fatiguing for crig.
And they take up space on the deck.
3500 size is just fine for crig with braid.

I have an older 4000 Series Symetre and it has been my mainstay spinning reel for a long time. While it is big and bulky, it casts like a dream and takes up like in the blink of an eye.

I have that same reel and have used it for 10XDs some big treble hooked swimbaits.
The gear ratio is 5.8:1

Huge line capacity is nice for chunking lures long distances and the drag system on spinning reels is great for treble hooked baits.

Not fatiguing to anchor the rod against your side and reel slowly with pauses.

I use a 4000 Revo SX on my drop shot rod.. I didn't notice much of weight change from the 2500 I was using. I started with a 1500 Shimano back in Georgia fishing for Spots. I wouldn't hesitate to get a 4000.

Many thanks for the replies. I had two 4000 size Pflueger spinning reels at one time, probably ten years ago. I remember that they were heavy. Like CCTX said, not as fatiguing if anchored at side, but when casting , moving around, and so forth, I couldn’t keep them anchored at my side very long.

Casting distance is where I’m thinking they may help me, but I can’t make up my mind if the extra distance is worth the weight problem. I know it comes down to a personal preference, but I still wondered what some of you guys thought.

I read an article that said a larger spool diameter is not needed if you use braid, because the line has no memory and won’t spring off of the reel and cause line guide slap, etc, etc, but I do know the braid has more friction when coming off of a small spool and casting distance. But I don’t have a large diameter spool reel not, so I can’t do a test.
