Y’all got any tips for someone that’s trying to improve on fishing deep water. I always end up going shallow and beating the banks.

My best advise would be to go with someone who can teach you. Not sure what lakes you fish, but find a guide that specializes in offshore fishing and teaching electronics and hire him for a day. Tell him before hand that your not looking to load the boat with fish, but instead want to spend the day learning. 75% of my trips are exactly that. My clients want to learn things that will help them catch fish in the future, not just for the day. If you’re around Sam Rayburn or Toledo Bend, give me a holler. And btw, it’s not too early. It’s happening offshore now!

Make your own brush piles and put them out near where you catch fish. Put them in 15-25’ of water and build some confidence.
I prefer bamboo or willow in combination with pvc.
Bamboo and willow bring them in quick and the pvc lasts forever

Knowing which lakes you fish could yield more specific advice If you are good at reading maps, find a good offshore location in 12-15fow that is holding fish. Mark that location precisely on your fish finder.
I chose 12-15fow , because that depth will hold fish year round.
Over the next two weeks, sink fresh brush at that location.
Then anchor down current from that location and start throwing a 5/8oz trig just past that location and get the feel of dragging the trig through the limbs. Learn to feel what a limb and ground feel like vs what a bite feels like.
Then, progress to 1oz crig and 11/16oz biffle hard head.
Once you get comfortable with those, buy a plug knocker, and advance to open hooked presentations like 3/4oz jigs, drop shot, crankbaits, and spoon.
Watch a lot of offshore bass fishing videos on YouTube.
For the brush, I like bamboo, Willow, and Bois d’ Arc. Bois d’ Arc is my favorite—extremely dense and shows up well on fish finders. Also lasts a long time and attracts bluegill, crappie in large numbers—then Mr big ole bass.

Invest in a good graph and spend a lot of time idling lake structure. Once you learn to identify bass and how big they are on the average along with using power fishing techniques your game will improve drastically.

I'm in the same boat! I grew up in Louisiana fishing lakes that had tons of trees and vegetation and were shallow water and now I'm in the DFW area fishing these reservoirs and they're just kicking my arse! There was no such thing as "deep water fishing" where I come from so I'm totally out of my element in a giant open, deep water lake. I just bit the bullet and installed 2 humminbird helix 10's on my boat to try to help me find fish but don't really know where to start. My plan at this point is to start graphing humps, dropoffs...etc but have no idea if that's the right thing to do. Maybe I do need to hire a guide and take a learning trip? I'm sick of beating the bank and catching dinks!

Interestingly, I catch a fair number of bass in 45 FOW while targeting whitebass (on spoons). I had to keep one last week who swallowed the spoon, and she had eggs in her. They must spawn in the deeper waters. On the same day, we caught a 3.3 and 4 pounder. Previous days, we've caught 6.5, 7.5 in the same depths. Go figure.

If you're fishing in these deep clear lakes like the ones we live near Tim, I bet 45 FOW in these is like 20 foot on Fork or Ray Roberts. Amazing how deep these bass get on Travis and Buch.

It is very hard to have any confidence fishing deep until you catch fish deep. I would recommend hiring a good guide May - August. The fish in most lakes are only shallow 2 months out of the year then they are back out on deeper structure. My partner caught an 8-2 last week in 20' of water off a brush pile that you could tell just finished spawning. Where do you fish?
