One thing I have come to appreciate after being a full time guide for the past 25 years is getting off early lol Today was one of those days. We started fishing at 8:30 a.m and were done with 56 nice crappie by 10 a.m. It started to sprinkle and Don says I think we got enough fish and I’ve had a blast let’s call it a day. I’m like 😳. Needless to say he didn’t have to tell me twice lol. All fish were in 1 ft or less and bit both jigs and minnows.

Wow! what a great day. I wish I knew how to find them like that! Is there anything certain you look for when looking that shallow?

I wish I could tell you I had something special to look for but it’s mainly all the years of experience on the water. I started fishing the lake in 1985 and can probably tell you every place I have caught a crappie and what time of year lol However when I’m searching for new fish I like to cover water with a road runner. Normally if I can get a few bites on it we can smash them in the same area on minnows. A good pair of polarized sunglasses is also a big factor. I’ll see spawning beds which can give you a good indication of where to make your casts. I will also scan the shallows with my side imaging to find beds in a little deeper water. Oh one more thing I almost forgot I also cover a lot of water with small crankbaits. It’s an excellent way to find them. Hope some of this helps.

I read a post on Fork and the guide said the spawn is over. I don't believe this is true. I know the spawn does not happen all at once. We caught more shallow Friday then we did previous weeks. I got a female full of eggs. Spawn seems later this year with fronts. I fished Hubbard a week ago and talked to a guy that had been fishing quite a bit and he said he has yet to catch them in normal spawning areas.
