Shad are hard for me to find on Grapevine . With the lake so high I don't want to trow the net in the shallows. Got to the lake yesterday morning to the only ramp open no problem. Now later in the day it was a hole new ball. The boat ramp looked like the 4 of July the wind was blowing like crazy there were people ever where. I had to wait in line almost a hour to load. And all this for one skinny catfish. But it was nice to get out of the house.

Ask 5 guys how they get bait and you'll get 5 different answers. There is more than one way to skin a cat and more than 1 Shad pattern on any given day. I rarely get my Gizzards shallow. I get mine in 15-40ft most of the year . Occasionally I will get them in 5ft if I see em sippin the surface by the ramp but most often I throw in 25-35ft year round. Doesn’t matter what lake your on, the key to getting them in mid-depths consistently is being able to pattern them on structure using sonar. Depressions, submerged ponds, ledges and edges, and points are where I target them. Gizzards have been grouped up good my last 6 trips and I haven’t had to make more than 3 throws to get enough for several trips. I been getting mine off the same ledge last 2 weeks. one day they were up on top of the ledge in 7 ft and every other day they have been sitting on the ledge in 17 ft or at the bottom of the ledge in 27ft. Side image sonar can really increase your precision and ability to drop right on top of em. You gotta have a deep net if you want to catch em mid depth though. Some days everything is scattered and you gotta throw a dozen times to get enough but most days it’s 1-3 throws. I’m not saying my way is the best way but it’s works for me.

If anyone is having trouble catching shad right now, you will never even smell one when it cools off

If anyone is having trouble catching shad right now, you will never even smell one when it cools off I havnt been on the lake in like 8 months, so idk about the pattern right now, but spring and early summer ive never had trouble finding shad on boat ramps, and near rip rap.
