Could this be your next outboard in the next decade?

Maybe include a spray can of two-stroke oil to fog around the boat at startup and take-off, just for confidence smile

Great more batteries to charge! Just what I needed! Says it needs a link of 8 batteries! Am I reading that right?

I’m not biased. I’ll run anything if it makes power and sense. Except an Evinrude. Won’t run those.

I was thinking the same thing. Like a Tesla....will break your neck if you're not ready.

I would estimate the cost of the batteries, 61kwh NMH lithium ion, to be 30k or more. Might be higher. Its twice the size of a Tesla S standard battery. Typical life of the battery is 14000 cycles so even if used daily it would last 38 years. Most of those long life batteries come with a 20 to 25 year life expectancy.

Is 61kwh like having 610 @100 ah batteries? If so, thats scary.

Maybe not 10 years.... I think the weight will be too significant. Cars are forgiving, boats somewhat and planes even less. I think it will take some type of stored energy innovation to make a really powerful outboard that can tournament fish and power our increasing demand for electronics and not weigh too much to be fast. Once the pros move to it then everyone will transition IMO.

I'd take whatever works the best. If a Tesla was affordable and pull my boat, I'd drive it in a heartbeat. It's not there yet. Everyone switched to fuel injection over a carb because it worked better. Same will be for whatever the next leap is. If it's electric or hamsters or whatever why do I care. I just want the most HP, least amount of maintenance, the best cost and the least amount of weight. To say never just makes no sense. Never is a long time. Once better tech than a 4 stroke comes out you won't have a choice anyway. That's all there will be. My guess is we're 10-15 years away from the next big change but certainly not more than 20.

As to weight, remember gas has weight too. You're not just adding battery weight, you're also subtracting gas weight. I haven't tried to figure it out but it may not be as big a difference as you think. A gallon of gas weighs 6 pounds so 20 gallons is 120 lbs. When I fill up I'm pushing around 240lbs.

Once they are out tree huggers will work to getting them mandatory on certain lakes due to low pollution. Can’t see one ever having much range.
