Have a buddy that is looking for offshore setups for tuna, amberjacks, possibly marlin. What would you recommend?

that's a pretty wide range...most depends on how he'll be fishing and what his budget is. Trolling? Jigging? Popping?

Quality big game salt water setups make bass tackle look like chump change.

Just throw some ideas out there. I don’t know anything about offshore fishing so I can give him advice. He just bought a six figure boat so I’m sure he’s not worried about price. He was looking at shimano but I was told penn is the best.

again, this is sort of like asking what vehicle to buy....soooooo many options. For jigging, Black Hole rods are one of the best. Match one of those up with an Avet, Shimano or Daiwa conventional jigging reel. For Trolling for marlin, having a 30W and 50W Penn reel on a roller rod. (probably 2-3 of each, depending on how far offshore you go and how often) For popping, Shimano Stella's can't be beat on a Black Hole popping rod. All of this combined would be in the $7-$10k range but that's the top of the line best stuff.

The solution to any problem - work, love, money, whatever - is to go fishing, and the worse the problem, the longer the trip should be. --John Gierach
