Took my son kayak fishing on Lewisville yesterday. Very little breeze and almost no boats out. Went to a windblown point that has produced for me in the past at this time of year and fished about 10-15' with small slabs. He figured out what the bite felt like after I'd caught about 5-6. We were getting perhaps one keeper for every dozen or more undersized fish. But you know what? He was catching fish consistently and having a blast, so I didn't really care about loading the stringers up. Later he told me that even with the foster families who'd taken him fishing before, he's never caught so many fish in one day.
Then I got a hybrid - at first it didn't really pull all that hard. Then it realized something wasn't right and took off on a long run. Sure is fun when a fish pulls your kayak around against the breeze. That little landing net that I bought is almost too small, but I got it in - and the net was VERY useful in keeping the fish in place once I put it in the boat (last trip to Texoma, I had a big striper bounce off my lap back into the water ... ggrrr). Didn't have a tape measure with me (must remember to put one of those adhesive measures on the side of each kayak), but it was easily a 23" fish, if not a bit longer.
The breeze started to pick up a bit, so we went back across the lake to our launch area and found the seagulls working there. More small sandbass. Then I set the hook on something big, and it dragged me away for a couple of minutes. Saw the big mottled back of a flathead come to the surface, the line broke, and I think everyone on the shoreline heard me cussing ...
End of the day, he had two keeper sandbass, and I had seven along with the hybrid, and am planning a rematch with that big ol' yellow cat.
