I know this question has been asked a bunch of times, but since I live in Alabama, I can have a cast net of any size. What size would you recommend for catching shad for jug fishing?

It really depends on the depth of water you are trying to catch Shad in and what size Shad you are trying to catch. Obviously the bigger the net the better chance you have at catching bait but also big bets are harder to throw. Are you experienced in throwing nets? Here in Texas the max size we can throw is 7โ. My nets are 7โ and I am able to catch plenty of bait, but sometimes it just takes more throws to get enough bait. I throw a 7โ 3/8โ mesh with 1 pound of lead per foot and it works good to about 15โ deep. If I am catching bait deeper than that I go to my 7โ 5/8โ mesh 1.5 pound per foot taped net. I have caught bait with it up to 40โ deep. Bigger the mesh the bigger the bait size you are targeting.
With all that being said get the biggest net you are comfortable throwing.

Na, I'm not very experienced at all. I've had a couple nets in the past, but never mastered throwing them.

If I were you I would get a Fitec Super Spreader. They are good nets and donโt break the bank. Make sure it has real lead weights ( they fall faster). Get 1 pound per foot. Get either a 6 or 7 foot, both are pretty easy to throw once you figure out a throwing method that works for you. Academy has the 6โ for around $35 and the 7โ for $50. Once you master that you can move to a bigger net if you want to.

Lots of videos on YouTube as well, but nothing beats practicing in your backyard. Luke on Catfish&Carp makes it look so easy when he throws his off the back of his pontoon with 10 fishing poles in the rod holders.
He is truly a sick individual.
