My son (14) asked about bass fishing. Anyone who knows me knows that isnt my thing and never will be. So, figured striper is a bass. We were going to hit texoma sat from the yaks but when i woke up i thought the temp was too cold for the yaks. We went from land. First we got bait, mostly all gizzard shad with a few threadfins. Went to where preston dead ends into texoma. I managed to get the truck a little stuck. It was muddy. Unloaded the gear and set up fishing. 3 casted rods and 1 (his) rod with a lure constantly casting. I went to get the truck unstuck. After a few mins im out and parked in a better spot. 1.5 hrs goes by with no bites so we decide to go to the lake side of the dam. Got set up the same way. I thought for sure we were gonna kill it here. Couple hrs goes by, 5 lost lures and no bites. Now this has become irritating. We cant not get one after all this work. We decide to go to the red river below the dam. Now this is gonna be the spot! I set up a 10 ft surf rod with a whole live shad, cast out and immeaditly boom it gets picked up. I hand the rod to my son and the fight is on. It runs down stream and wraps up in the flooded remainder of the stairs that go down to the water. Line breaks. We are excited now and both start casting out rods. Current is super strong. I tried 10 oz of lead and couldnt keep bait down. The current is so strong every time we reel in our bait is gone. We go to using heavy spoons and jig heads with big rubber i think they are called swim baits....idk,not my type of fishing. After the first run no hookups and a few more lost lures we call it a day. Sunday i wake up early and load kayaks. Now we have to catch one! We have the kayak magic. Fish always are supposed to bite when your in a kayak. Its in the rules. We go to highport marina and launch about 7am. We paddled all over,a total of 9 miles. Trolled every single lure we had till about 2 or so. Man, it was tough fishing but nice paddling. My son wants to come offshore this summer so the paddling is good for him. On the paddle back in we saw an old friend rodger brown(master of all things texoma) headed out...in a motor boat...cheater. hahaha. Ofcourse who could catch as many fish as him and still have the energy left to paddle or pedal. I think we will wait till the weather warms up a bit and try again. It would be nice to have a 20 mile day with my son so he will be ready for offshore. I never troll in the salt less that 10-12 miles and have gone over 20 many times.

Thanks for the report Christian. Even though it was frustrating at times at least you were fishing...with your son. thumb

You get out of it what you put into it!

Time spent fishing cannot be deducted from a man's life.

Yep, time with your son and a little exercise. Y'all won.

All this rain makes it tough for all things bass... and crappie.

Dont get me wrong. I love spending time with my son. He is every fathers dream for a son. I am disappointed in myself for not being able to get him at least 1 in 2 full days of fishing...and not just lazy fishing either, we put in work. Oh well. Next time. Now i got some proper rods and reel setups now to stock up on lures.

That's why it's called "fishing" and not "catching".
