Protective gear ALWAYS - how would one feel after giving the OK for a few spins and a tie rod breaks = BOOM right into a tree or fence post.

Yes and a roll bar of some sort. Too many kids with bad neck injuries from rollovers.

Also, consider quality equipment. A good motocross helmet should meet current DOT certification. Gloves and boots are also essential. Cheap equipment, though possibly better than no equipment, is not the direction to go.

helmet saved my life back in 78 when I dumped my sportster, it rode me for about 25 yards on asphalt then we were in the grass. bike was across my upper torso, buddy on back didn't even get a scratch, I was in icu for 4 days in a coma. have not been back on a bike since either.
