There are a lot of good choices. I just got a Dobyns Xstacy 755 and it’s pretty awesome but comes with a big price tag but it’s expensive.

Whatever brand you are using for other stuff and like their rods....start there and see what that brand offers in a flipping stick and go from there.

I like the Dobyns DX 795 HP. There are alot of nice rods on the market and you just gotta shop around.

Ford-Chevy-Dodge...

Find the one that feels the best to you. Not sure there is a "best"

I wouldn’t focus so much on brand than I would specs as they relate to you. I flip mostly with a 6’6” rod. I use a 7’2” if I am punching mats or flipping lily pads because that’s my braid set up. Those 8’ rods are to big for me.

Fishing the bigger rods does take a toll on you but I couldn’t go down to a 6’6 but to each his own I guess

What’s the reasoning behind using longer rods like the 8’? I’ve always only owned and used rods that are 7’ so that’s my baseline experience.

Kind of an interesting evolution in bait casting rods. 30-40 years ago baitcasting rods were commonly 5’-6’ long(and usually had a pistol grip). Aside from a big long surf casting rod or other speciality rods 6’6” was considered a really long rod. Than 7’ long baitcasting rods became a standard “longer” rod for bass fishing. Not saying they were just invented but in the last few years it seems that 7’3”, 7’6”, 7’8” and even 8’ have become industry standard offerings for baitcasters for bass fishing. Just another evolution. Each has its advantages. Through all this time longer rods have always been offered as “Flipping Rods” to get your lure above the obstacles, above the water, leveraging fish out of cover..... But in the end as always it comes down to personal taste(comfort). One guy likes a 6’ rod for everything and another uses nearly 8’ rods for almost everything. I personally prefer a 7’ rod for just about everything. Simply comes down to do you LIKE?

First, are you flipping or pitching to the wood? Two different techniques, I presume that your'e pitching since you mentioned 1/2oz and wood. For pitching, I like a 7'3"-7'6" rod, for flipping a 7'6"-8' rod. Rod brands are personal preference. I have fallen in love with ALX Rods, they're sensitive, balanced and light weight. Not to mention they're less than $230 but feel/handle like a $300-400 rod, and made in the USA. I use the Zolo Brawler or IKOS Hammer 73 for pitching, and the Zolo Powerbolt for flipping.
