Hey guys new to the forum and somewhat new to smacks and jacks. I've spent most of my life catching specs and reds but enjoy running out to the jetty with a spoon occasionally.

I know a few indicators for Spanish mackerel in Surfside are green water, rising tide and a South/Southeast wind, but I can't find a good resource to check the water color or clarity online. Are there some other indicators that I should know about? I've tried the octagons surf cam, but it is hard to make out the clarity of the water so I try looking at the last 2 days winds.

I'm living in Houston now so driving the hour down to Surfside to get skunked hurts a bit. Hoping to pick up some tips or resources to help me decide when to jump in the car and head south.

Thanks

Wind direction and velocity are your factors in water conditions. Light SE is optimum.

There's a zillion weather apps, here's one: https://www.ventusky.com/?p=34.6;-96.1;3&l=rain-3h

Thanks for the weather app link Pat!

I ran down to the jetty Wednesday morning when the wind was ideal, but the water was still pretty murky from the high winds on Tuesday. Thinking I might run down again tomorrow morning with the low South wind hopefully pushing that green water in a bit more.

Well I went down to the jetty today and caught my first jack. It was a crazy 30 min battle and I almost got spooled because I was using 25lb test and no leader, but I got him.

Way to go! I was out there with 3 of my buddies, not much catching going on. I could not believe how much different the Galveston jetties are in terms of types of tackle needed. look like folks were more prepared for surf fishing, heck a guy caught a false albacore!

Tight lines, Nice job

Thanks and Gig Em
