I agree. But to each their own. I am lucky, I just learned to do it that way from the start. Like many I started with a spinning rod. So not being told otherwise when I went to get my first baitcaster, it made sense to me to reel with my left hand, just like I did with my spinning rods.
Keeps my strong hand holding the rod and no switching hands.

I agree. But to each their own. I am lucky, I just learned to do it that way from the start. Like many I started with a spinning rod. So not being told otherwise when I went to get my first baitcaster, it made sense to me to reel with my left hand, just like I did with my spinning rods.
Keeps my strong hand holding the rod and no switching hands. yep, I learned right reel baitcaster at a young age then fished spinning for years and years so when I went back to baitcaster I just kept the left reeling.

I’m confused. I use both. Plastics get a left handed reel, so I can flip, pitch, work the bait without ever changing hands. Hollow body topawater stuff and other topwater that has to be “walked” is left handed. Cast and wind stuff, like cranks and buzzbaits, get right handed reels. Jerk baits are left handed. C rig is either, depending on wind direction and if I’m fishing solo or team. Don’t like sword fighting with my teammate. Spinning gear is left handed.
In the boat, all rods and reels are color coded. Left handed stuff gets blue socks and blue reel covers. Right handed stuff is all black. Spinning stuff is black and blue, since I COULD swap the handles if I wanted to. (Never have or would, but could)
There is no right or wrong. Just one or the other is better for me.
Eat. Sleep. Fish.

Have been ambidextrous my whole life. It’s worked out great for fishing. I use all right hand reels but can cast, flip, pitch, bomb, etc with either hand/arm. I could switch to all lefties and not miss a beat, just no reason to do that.

They are hard to find but when you do they are usually on sale! So if I am using spinning or baitcasting the rod stays in my right hand and I reel with the left. Just like a "lefty" would. The rod never leaves the right hand.

I was born left handed ( 61') , my father was an Aerospace Engineer and insisted that I should not be allowed to do anything left handed ( left handers might be at a disadvantage ) . Finally , at the age of 7 , I was allowed to do things in my natural hand .
Luckily , I started fishing afterwards and ended up holding the rod in my left hand and reeling in with my right --- that always felt " normal " .
My son , is right handed and he learned to do it exactly the same as me . When we see guys throw with one hand and switch hands to reel --- we both just look at them --kinda weird .

I don't think you could get a 5000 in left handed in the mid 60s, learned to cast right handed and swap to left hand to hold rod. fishing about 60 yrs now and never been a problem. I use spinning gear with left handled reels, all baitcasters are right handle reels.

been fishing leftys for 55 years starting with a Mitchell 300 and they are not hard to find. Besides all of my Shimano's I am now buying Johnny Morris Platinums in 8:3-1 . Great reels.

This is correct, at least for me.^^^^^ I grew up with left-handed spinning reels and then added left handed bait casters. I'm right handed and I cast and work the rod right handed. I've read articles from pros who say when you're switching hands, you're missing bites. My fishing skills stink as it is...can't be missing bites! That said, at the end of the day, as long as you get the fish in the boat you're doing it right....

I'm left handed. Growing up (I'm 63) I could not find a left handed reel so I learned to cast left handed and reel with my right hand. The first baitcasting reel I owned was a Garcia 5500C (right handed). Seems natural to me even though when I started fishing I used a Mitchel 300 spinning reel with the left hand side. No switching hands for me.
