Looks like a wolf spider. They feed on small children and pets. Beware.

Looks like Herpyllus ecclesiasticus, the eastern parson spider. Harmless. This is based on what appear to be the pale markings on the top of the cephalothorax and abdomen. Google that species and see if it matches.

Thanks for the replies. He's dead at this point. At the time, the intruder was in my kitchen and i felt that our lives and property were in grave danger, so i think it was a good kill.

after looking at some comparative pics, i think it most closely resembled a wolf spider. Although it was also close to the one Tallgrass suggested.
I named him "Zed" -

Don’t kill them or the little fuzzy black spiders. They eat bugs that you don’t want in your home. I think that wolf spider will rear up if you try to pick it up. It’s pretty cool to see.
