I have a question that I've always wondered. How come you don't see any many trophy blue cats caught as the water warms up a bit? We caught a few from Nov-Feb but now all we seem to catch are 1-5 pounds. Not complaining, just wondering. Do they get less active as the water warms? Our water temp here is 57. Seems like I see the same from guides as well - their big blue cats seem to slow down as well. Thoughts?

It always slows down when the water warms.

IMO it’s because most of them move shallow following bait and there is so much shallow water on a lake which spreads them out so much. Also, they are getting the spawn on their mind and looking for holes and brush to spawn in and not eating like they do in the winter. In the winter they are eating everything because they are trying to put on as much weight as they can to prepare for the spawn. They typically don’t each much in the spawn so they live off their fat.

This is the time of year they move up shallow and feed on spawning Shad. After they are done feeding up the biggest baddest fish head to their spawning areas and will stay in their burrow guarding eggs and fry..The big males guard the nest and when the fry have hatched and left the nest the big males go find another big female and take her back to his nest. Most of the big fish run up the river and spawn in the deep holes up stream but not all. We occasionally catch one of these nesting fish when drifting the rocky humps and they stink so bad you don’t want one in your boat. They stank and are skinny from not eating much. September we start catching the occasional toad. As the big rains come in mid September, the toads ride the water back down into the main lake and you start marking them again. with every front and rain, the more big fish enter the lake. By mid October we’re catching some bigger fish on the upper end of the lake.

The spawning process for blue catfish is long.

They don’t feed hardly at all when they are in this process...you start seeing them feed again here on Tawakoni in July.

That does it mean that you won’t catch one in May or June… It’s just rare.
