On our way back in my wife said “well that was fun!” to my surprise. I asked my son if he still had a little bit of fun even though we only caught a handful of small fish and he said “No! I had a lot of fun!” Jax really doesn’t care if we catch many fish and to tell you the truth he was smoked after he reeling in the 12 lbr. I was keeping my fingers crossed we could hang a fish that weights more than him and we definitely went over some fish that would have fit the bill but we needed a stick of dynamite to get em.

El Gato, tried to send you a message but your inbox is full. Wanted to get your advice on rod holders for drift fishing and fishing off the back. Wanted to see if you had inexpensive ideas vs the pricey driftmaster rod holders. I have a Lowe 1648 Jon boat.

I have some old driftmasters you can have jj4mel. You have to find the necessary bases for them. Let me look out in my shop this afternoon and see what I can find.

I cleared out some PMs...I probably have some star bases for them but not sure if those will work for your application...send me some close up pics of the back area of your boat and I will see if I can help you out. I’d also suggest making a post about your boat and ask how other guys have rigged theirs. When drifting I like to be able to fish out the back and also the side. I prefer drifting out the back most of the time so I can use my trolling motor to move me around and keep me in the sweet spots buts it’s also much more stable fishing out the back when there are waves. I still fish out the side occasionally if the conditions are perfect and I don’t need to be so precise while drift. We’re coming into the time of year when the fish move shallow and anchor fishing is your best method for catching them. You can still catch some drifting in March and early April but not like when your anchored in the right area. In mid April the blues will move back out into the main lake and start relating to structure in mid depths... around mid April is a good time to start taking kids drift fishing cuz the fish are more predictable and easy to catch.

Saturday Feb 29th......Got out and fished with the family this morning. Bait was scattered but finally found some in 27 ft. Started out drifting in 22 ft and caught a handful of 10 lbrs...moved out to 40 ft ledge and caught a few teeners. Moves to a main lake point and caught a 21 lbr in 37ft if water. Fish were at all depths today.

Great job getting your son out on some fine fish.
Not very often you can claim you caught one that was taller than your shoulders.
Sure the memories you created today will be replayed many times in the future.
Wont't be long you will have to step up your game to keep up with him.

Thanks amigos! We’ll be after em every chance we get now that spring is here. Lewisville flood gates are finally closed so maybe I can start to find a decent pattern to fish. Been targeting ambush points in mid depth cuz that’s the only place I have found active fish. Marked tons of cats in and around the channel out deep and mid depths lately but most of the active fish I’ve found have come off points, humps, and ledges. Been having to work my tail off to put fish in the boat lately. Gonna anchor shallow next trip and stay there for the next 6 weeks. I’m ready for pleasure drifting and 40 fish stringers!

Good fish indeed. I wanted to get out but we had scattered soccer games Saturday and Sunday was out of the question with the hurricane winds!! Drove over Lake Ray Roberts in a few different areas and the water was muddy with 3ft waves. Never saw a single boat out there.
