Went fishing sat. Its the first time since the day after christmas. Went to a spot we have had luck in the passed. The bait was there, nice big cutter shad. We started off seperate, my son tied off to a tree my buddy anchored and me seeing how drifting will do. Got 1 dink catfish on the drift. Changed tactics and found a tree to tie off to. Got a line peeling run. Nice blue 20-25 lbs. Decided to move up wind a mile or so, my son wanted to stay where he was at. Buddy and i moved a mile or so up tied off to trees and casted out. My bro gets a small blue. I notice my line moving sideways and know its prob a gar so i reel up and wam, line starts flying off my reel. I tighten my drag a bit,im using an abu 5000 with #20 mono. It wont stop. Prob is there are trees everywhere and i just know its gonna wrap me around a tree. Tightened my drag all the way and start short pumping and reeling to try and turn the fish. I get itclose to the boat but i still cant see the fish but know now its a beast of a catfish. By this time i am 15 or so mins into the fight and it goes on another huge run. My kayak is tied to a tree but my yak is going all over the place. Finally after 20 or 30 mins i get it to the kayak again and see, it has all my lines tangled up. Luckly i was able to net well, kindof net the head of the fish. It was huge. My son calls me on the phone as i try to get it in the kayak. He calls again and says he has a monster. 14 year old boys tend to streach stories some so with the monster i got start paddling back to him. Once i get to him i see him holding his net in the water, i get around to that side and a beast it is. A solid 30-35 lb blue. We paddle to shore to get a few pics. I think my cat was well over 70 lbs mabey more and his at just over 30 lbs looks small. We got a few pics and released both fish to fight another day. I cant post pics on here as i am not tec savy...but it really did happen. Hahaha. My son made me really proud landing such a big fish completley on his own.

Man what a fish! Great trip. I love fishing for cats out of a kayak. It's boring at times but then you have days like that and it keeps you coming back. Ok I haven't had a day like that but you get what I'm saying

Thanks all. My son made me super proud. He has been going off on his own, not following me. He is using what he has learned to make it happen on his own. As a father it is a great thing to see the lessons we try and teach sink in. Never worked for my dad but...
