Been checking out some used trailers online and several people want to sell with just a Bill of Sale. I am guessing no actual title in hand. This sounds like a major PIA to me for registering it in ones name. What's the scoop on this? More trouble than it's worth?

It's a 16 ft, double axle trailer.

is the registration current on the trailer? and is current in the name of the person selling it to you?

Trailers are not as much trouble as boats are

it has to either be registered or have a title if there is a tag on it.

the 16' I had was just registered, no title and no weighing it etc. much easier. under 4k is eligible, over has to be titled.

if they are selling as home made and are not a shop then I would look elsewhere. jmo

Depends on where you are registering. Where I live, bill of sale is no problem. They don't question shop-made.

Even the trailer for my 21' Ranger is not titled as there was no legal requirement for it to BE titled in the state of Texas. It qualifies as exempt from title requirements. I do have the Certificate of Origin that came with it from the manufacturer, That gets turned in to the State to get a title should it ever be necessary. Internet Search engines are easy to use. Below is what the TX DMV says about manufactured trailers: If the gross weight is under 4000 pounds, they're not asking for a title.

If your manufactured trailer's gross weight exceeds 4,000 lbs., it must be titled. Submit the following documents to your county tax assessor-collector office:

Evidence of ownership:
New trailer: Manufacturer Certificate of Origin*, or
Used trailer over 4,000 lbs. gross weight: Certificate of Title, or
Used trailer less than or equal to 4,000 lbs. gross weight: Bill of Sale + Registration Receipt.

Thank y'all for the insight and input! The particular one I was looking at sold already, but with the oilfields heading the direction they are, I bet one turns up soon. Just have to keep an eye on the auction sites.

Thank all!

Be careful in what you buy. A really good deal maybe stolen.

Not a big deal at all. I have purchased new trailers from the dealerships and the tax office did not want to issue a title, they only want to register them for tags. I think of all the trailers I have only two actually have titles and the others just have bill of sale.
