I am looking to see who has the best map chip out now. I fish basically Port O'conner to Baffin Bay. I am running the navionics chip now with my lowrance but also have a garmin and a humminbird unit to use if the maps are better on those. Any help would be appreciated.

I have the Navionics chip on my Lowrance and the upgraded maps on my Garmin with the relief shading which is supposed to be using Navionics data now. The Navionics on my Lowrance is better, but I never really trust it. I have been running in open water down in POC where it says I am supposed to be 5 feet and all of a sudden the depth finder shows a foot and a half and I pucker up. Definitely more detail on the Navionics chip though. However I prefer the Garmin chip with relief shading on fresh water. Very accurate.

Trusting any GPS for navigating a south TX bay is going to be painful. You have to navigate by sight, watching wave height and bottom color.

I 2nd what Pat says. Navionics can help with some obstructions or obstacles but for the most part you have to be able to read the water. The GPS trail is the best feature for me on the coast. It leaves a trail to follow headed back to the ramp. Really handy when fog rolls in.

It's pretty simple.
When the wind is blowing, you understand a wave will be 1/2 the water depth. 6" wave is a foot of water. I know I can run all day in 2" so as long as I avoid the slick shoal water, I'm ok. When I ran my tunnel hull, I knew I was good through 6" so if it was a 3" ripple, it was good water.

When the rare times the wind slacks, a dark bottom is grass, and it'll be at least 8" on low tide, white sand is what you avoid, so pay attention where you're going, and you'll be fine.

I don't really like any of them, they are good for general reference imo. As for Baffin, experience > nav chip.
