I've been thinking about purchasing one of these boosters to have for a backup for my starter battery. Does anyone have one and do they work as advertised? Thankyou for your replies.

I certainly do (have one). I won't be without one in the future either! I had another brand for several years, but it eventually swelled in failure so that I was afraid to use it again. I've had my Noco Boost XL (GB50) for several months. I've jumpstarted things from lawn-mowers to a Chevy Tahoe (350 V8 engine) and my late model Chevy with a 5.3L engine.I jumped both of those vehicles several times to get me over to when I could buy new batteries for them. I'm confident it will jump my 250 Mercury, a primary reason I considered buying one.
I don't think I would buy anything less than the GB50. Having the extra amps capability is peace of mind that a jump attempt won't end in failure. It's also very convenient that it will recharge via USB in the vehicle. I've done several jumps on a single charge of the unit, so in the end, I'm impressed with it.

I have a NOCO Boost Plus GB40 1000 Amp model and it works great. Have jumped off several V-8 vehicles and it works very well. I have never needed it in the boat but I don't think it would have a problem jumping any modern engine. They are $99.00 at Amazon but if you watch them they will put them on sale for $69.95 regularly.

Ii have a NOCO on board charger on my boat and it has never failed me in over 10 years. Just in case I also have the GB50 and have never needed it, but have jumped others. Hard to go wrong with NOCO products, they cost a little more but worth it.

The last time I needed one was on Lake Benbrook in the the 80's. I still remember the utter desperation while trying to pull start my inline 150 Mercury. The pull rope went around the flywheel twice. I am a bigger than average guy but with all my might I would pull that rope and the motor would go thump thump....... Eventually it got started and I ended up always going with an oversized battery as a starter.
I have some left over lithium LTO cells that make (6X2.75) 16 volts and over 100 amps. A six pack weighs 7 pounds and I'm sure those would work.

We have a 40 and a “bigger one” at work. YES!!!! THEY WORK!
We call it the “mighty cricket”. It amazes me when it starts some of the high compression motors we build.
We use these every day, several times a day. They are both still going strong I highly recommend them.

How long can you let the NOCO booster sit unused before you need to charge it again?

I've let mine sit idle for 3 months and it still started a V8 gas truck engine. The one I have is charged via a USB cable, so I can plug it into the truck's USB port from time to time to make sure it's topped off.. Be careful about leaving any of them in your closed up vehicle out in the Texas sun. All lithium cells are temperature sensitive, and this can degrade the battery, even causing them to swell, rupturing the case. This happened to my 4 year old AntiGravity brand jump starter, prompting me to buy the NOCO.
