I took the wife's vehicle in to turn rotors and replace pads at our local dealership (one of the big three with the shortest name) service dept because I didn't feel like waiting on parts. She was quoted $225.00 two weeks back. After looking at the invoice, this is what they tried to charge me: Parts-ok, labor-ok, tax-fine. Then I notice a $15 charge for "shop charge" and $1.50 for "data charge." I asked what both were for. They stated the shop charge was to pay for rags, brooms, etc. to clean the shop, but the worst one was the data charge which they explained was to store my data in THEIR database. I voiced my displeasure and they stated the charges are mandated by the corporate office. Needless to say, I refused to pay those two and after about five minutes of rational, controlled debate, they took the charges off the bill.

Just letting y'all know if you visit a corporate-controlled service dept, be aware of these bogus charges. Much like resort fees charged at so many non-resort hotels nowadays. Everyone trying to take more and more change out of your pocket.

Yeah shop charges are normal. Data charge I don’t know. When I worked at Lexus I would have just taken the $1.50 charge off of it bothered you that much.

Just bought a new car. ~$750 'doc' fee.one dealer wanted $1000. Not too bad for the secretary to go to the courthouse and pick up a tag..

This is standard. We see environmental, disposal and shop fees all the time. Ranges from 5, 8, 10% sometimes...

If at all possible, avoid the dealer ships. They don't all them stealer ships for nothing.

Maybe it's time we demand those "extra" fees STOP.

Wife and I went to a restaurant out of state last month; they tried to charge me $1.50 just for using a credit card to pay. No signs when we walked in so I refused to pay it. Most places are legit but some try to nickel and dime you!

I never go back to a stealership after the warranty expires. When I had my 100k service done, my Mom & Pop shop said X amount, plus tax. And that was how much I paid.

They probably break them out because somebody sued them.

Overhead costs will always be rolled into your bill whether it's a meal at a restaurant or service at a mechanic's shop.

Had to be an accesory fee or admin fee. State max is $150 for doc fee.

Same fee they charge $750 for I charge $327. Basically covers the 90 day warranty and free maintenance for 1 year I include with all my vehicles. 99% of the time people never even ask about it.

I'll Never ever take my vehicle to a dealership's service department once warrantys are gone. you will get ripped off if they think they can get away with it. Ex. GF took her car to dmd cause her wipers would only go up but wouldn't come down and was told she needed a new motor $560 took it too a friend who when it was turned on and he seen what it would do knew it was the arm that was bad $67. I was able to keep my cool and not rip someone a new one, still should have turned them into the BBB.

I went to the doctor last year. When the bill was sent to the insurance company, they charged a fee for the doctor and a "facility fee". Insurance paid the doctor and I had to pay the "facility fee".
