You are correct river-rat but some of the lessons made you think and use common sense.

For instance I never had to tell a raw recruit twice to go and get me a bucket of steam from the snipes.

I liked to send the pickle to the supply sgt to ask for a 5 gal pail of prop wash and 10 yards of flight line.

all I ever got to do shipboard was ride on the kennedy for 30 days while some new radio stuff was installed. 3 of us went to help since we had been working with the ibm techs in naples.
good times but all we did was ride around in the med. watched some tomcats fly/land, dudes that fly off carriers have huge cajones, we choppered from the nato base to ship and back.

Had a female drill sgt. She was so tiny and petite, working alongside huge, chiseled men (the other drill sgts). Us young foolish recruits sort of naturally dismissed her, or thought little of her, focusing our fear on the large men...

...until night three. Dear Lord in heaven night three. 20 years ago plus and I still remember night 3.

She let us know PRECISELY who she was and her place on the totem pole. Far and away the MOST intimidating drill sgt in the company, and to this day probably the most intimidating person I've ever met.
