Hey guys. Thinking of taking a small den of boys for BSA (Webelos) to try to teach them to fish, hopefully catch heh, clean, cook, build a fire etc...and told the State Park is a good place. I have all the tackle. Thinking some weekend in March. Any good spots to take the boys on the SP where we can spread them out and maybe get them on some fish?

Not trying to horn in on folks, but not many places to camp and go over this stuff with them. Lots of places for day fishing, just not so much for camping where they can catch.

Hoping to know more tomorrow night at the den meeting as to when.

Thanks! If anyone is out and about when we go, would love for folks to stop by and let them ask questions. Really want them to catch the bug for fishing...I know my son already has it as he is my first mate, heh

Russ

Russ, if you are looking for a place to camp at the park that may be hard to do right now. If you want to book a camp site during the white bass run you have to do it usually months in advance. Due to the white bass run and it being spring break it gets booked and crowded fast. Call the park though, I remember seeing or hearing something about scouts and they may have accommodations to allow you in, possibly? If you don't get a camp site and you want to bring the kids up during the day I'd recommended getting there before 9 or 10 am. they close the park down to incoming visitors once it reaches capacity, which is happens really fast. If you do get in to fish and the conditions are right ( water level not high, not muddy, not flowing fast and the fish are running) you should be able to find a spot upstream from the main camping area to catch in the least a few fish for the kids.
Last year I took my 3 yr old son camping and on the first day we were there about dusk we caught 15 in about 45 minutes from the bank, he had a blast and almost caught one by himself. next day heavy rains from up north raised the river level 3 ft, dirtied the water and sped up the flow, took 2 days for the bite to come back. We only caught 3 more fish the next few days. That was the only thing to stop the bite from happening. This is one of the best places to get the fishing badges and a lot of others for the BSA, just takes a lot of planning. Hope you can get in and the kids have fun. good luck

How is the Bend park (bank fishing) on week days? I hear it can get pretty crowded there on weekends. I'd love to get in on some good whites and crappie. But with the virus [censored] going on, I would like to avoid too many folks. Maybe I'll do Belton lake/Leon river upstream from 36 bridge. Both are about the same distance from me.

I live in Denton Co and we just got work of shelter in place. I guess that I wont be going Thurs to the park. Man, very disappointing because I have been wanting to camp there for 2 years. I finally got a riverfront site, and now cant go due to the rule

Hey fishin, We are in a stay-at-home here in Austin but one of the essential activities include hiking, walking, outdoor activities, so I'm not letting this stop me as I will be there camping and kayak fishing starting tomorrow!
