We try to go to the coast every other year, between Corpus Christi and Galveston. I've always just take some of my bass rigs but then I have to reline and oil up everything so I bought two saltwater rigs. I bought a Penn 10 ft surf rod and a Penn 7ft inshore, both spin cast reels. The 7 footer I plan on using 10lb mono to use with swim baits and such. The 10 ft rod will be used for live bait fishing in the surf. What line set up should I use? I was thinking 20 to 30 lb with a wire leader.

No 10# at all IMO. I use at least 20# mainline and 30# leader line.
The big rod I'd use 30# and if needed, 40# leader line. But this just me.

I mostly fly fish, but my spinning reels all have 6, 8, or 10 pound braid, and my levelwinds 12 pound monofilament. My fly rod tippets range from 4 pound to 12 pound, mostly fluorocarbon. But that’s just me. I certainly don’t see the need for anything heavier, other than using braid on a levelwind. I love levelwinds, but they don’t like too small a diameter line.

Ok, I'll look at some 20 to 30 lb line to spool these rigs with. Thanks.

On our surf rods we use 30# braid. Leaders are made of 80# mono with 2 7/0 hooks on them, snap at the bottom for a spider weight.[Linked Image]

I use this exact rig, basically, except I use loop to loop to connect to main line, a loop in the end to attach the weight, and "king sling" knots, I think it's called, to attach the hooks. Some sort of loop knot. I use 60# braid as my main line and 30-40# mono for my leaders. I just carry a spool and tie them as needed.

It all depends on what you are trying to catch. Thirty pound will work for most of the big stuff. Heavier for sharks. Also take a smaller rod to throw spoons. There are lots of smaller fish fish in the surf.

I did get a 7 footer to use with swim baits and such. What other baits would you suggest for the surf?

Shrimp tout tails on a lead head are good. I like Johnson 3/4 oz gold spoons. Mirro-lure suspended lures or topwater lures are productive.

If you just want to catch something, throw out a piece of shrimp or cut bait on a hook. If nothing else, you should get some great bait.
