Friend of mine is looking at a 1998 Blazer 202 Pro V with a 2003 Yamaha HPDI 225.

Wondering what yall think about the boat and motor, but more importantly that motor.. I know those big block HPDIs had a run of issues.

Thanks

Without first hand knowledge of the boat and a mechanic looking and testing the motor, it’s all just meaningless opinions.

Not really... I'm not asking about that exact motor on the back.. I wanna know experiences with the HPDI in general

Older blazers are bad about separating at the back of the boat. Make sure you look it over around the boat where the rub rail is installed. The gel was super thin on my 2004 and had issues when i even bumped into anything. They are fast boats with good storage. I didn’t like how low the seats are but overall it was a decent fishing platform. The only experience i have is through friends with that motor and everyone had trim issues.

I have a friend with an HPDI on his 21i class Skeeter and it’s been flawless. But, I have heard the HPDI is prone to disaster from multiple folks. This is honest truth. His boat is likely as neglected mechanically as they get. The guy doesn’t know what a spark plug is. The guys that complain about their HPDIs say they were meticulous about service. I also have a really good friend with an HPDI 225 on an older ZX. It blew up and he gave the boat to his stepson and bought a new FX. His stepson paid to have it rebuilt and it immediately blew up on the builder as he was testing it. Two powerheads later, I think they finally found the initial problem. A lift pump. Now it’s good again. Maybe.

See what I mean. That’s what your gonna get as responses. Not trying to be a jerk. But opinions are what your gonna get and they are only good if it’s what you want to hear.

I am a Yamaha guy. I think they build great motors....but, if I had some serious issues with Yamaha, I’d stay away from them. My opinion is based off of my own experience. I believe they are good, well, until they ain’t. Ha. M

I believe the actual history of a specific motor is far more informative than a guys opinion. The friend with the ZX? He had years and years of trouble free fishing. Then months of aggravation. Same motor. If he fixed it and sold it, imagine the opinion of the new owner on hIs HPDI? Without the history, your only getting half the story.

My HPDI blew in Jan 2007. Yamaha replaced the powerhead and its been a running machine since. Haven't checked the hours lately but I know its a ton.

if you are not willing to spend between 400.00 to 500.00 a year on changing all the filters on these motors don't buy it they are good motors fuel efficient but do require regular maintaining.

My HPDI has 1100 hours on it. Powerhead did blow around 850 hours and I had it rebuilt. Other than the day it blew it has been a great motor.

200 hrs in 22 yrs? I’m not a huge believer in how many people tell you the best motor is the one that has a ton of hours AND was run wide open continually. But 200 hrs on the motor in 22 years? On a positive note: unless it was neglected and stored outside the boat ought to look brand new!

Scary scenario....I've never blew an engine until 2019 because I've always used my boats on a very frequent basis. I took possession of Red's old '99 that hasn't been started for almost 5 years, did all the work to fix it up, and it only took me 4 months before I blew the powerhead. No use is worse than misuse.

I agree, matter in fact have been through that with an Optimax, but he likes the fact that it's hardly used. I'd rather have motor that's been ran, ESPECIALLY an HPDI.. Those motors hate to sit from my experience

We went and looked at the rig today.. Lots of small issues here and there. Has had transom reinforced and some floor work. It seemed like a solid boat though

On the other hand, I bought my 2003 ZX200 (HPDI 200) in 2013 with 78 hours. Has run like a top for seven years with absolutely 0 issues.
