I am looking at bed extender for a kayak. I am looking at T bone or something very similar that has less removeable pieces to secure or risk being stolen. It looks like the T bone has two places to place locks one at the hitch obviously and another towards the bar where the kayak would be secured and rest. Any thoughts or recommendations are appreciated.

Check out Harbor Freight. They have bed extenders and the price isn't bad either. Hopefully they will have what you are needing for a bed extender.

I have a T-Bone. When I first started using it, I’d take it off the receiver, run a cable to secure both parts, and lock it down in the truck bed. Now, I just leave it in the receiver with a lock. It is just one less thing to do after a long day on the water. If someone wants to steal an oddball object like the crossbar, I guess they’ll steal the crossbar. I can still transport the kayak just laying in the bed so I can make it home. I figure that it’s more likely that someone will smash a window and steal my park pass that has to be displayed, etc.

Same here. T-bone with receiver lock.

The T-bone is a solid choice in my opinion. Many of the less expensive extenders have a right angle... On most trucks this causes the extender to drag on driveways. The T-bone has a curve... This eleminates dragging.

It looks like I maybe put a long shaft padlock thru the shaft near the crossbar and solve that problem. I will look at one close up to see if that is a possibility.

This is what I was thinking. My driveway has a bit of a hill/angle before the sidewalk and street.

The T-bone has a pin that connects the cross bar to the receiver bar. If you are concerned about someone stealing the cross bar, you could drill a larger hole and pin the cross bar in place with a receiver lock.

In addition to the pin, there is also has a bolt that takes the slop out of the cross bar connection. You could grind the bolt off after tightening. In the unlikely event that you need to take it apart later, you could use a Dremel to grind a slot in the bolt for a large screwdriver.

Personally, I'm not concerned about someone stealing the cross bar. However, if I ever do become concerned, I would probably grind the bolt off.

My extender has 3 pieces, I just separate them into 2 and store them in the truck cab when on the water.
