Wife is just getting started with a baitcasting reel. While she works on learning how to cast, I am going to get her a spinning reel which I plan on spooling with braid. We'll be fishing mainly weightless flukes/senkos and texas rigged worms. I'd rather not mess with adding a mono or fluoro leader to her braid unless you think it really does translate to more bites. What do you all think?

Makes no difference except for two things:
Added weight to make the braid sink--weightless presentations would be an example.
Using a lower breaking strength leader to make it easier to break off when hung up.

Thanks for initial replies. As per water clarity comment, we'll be on Lewisville, Grapevine and Roberts mostly...so basically stained water

Not to mention fluoro way less visible than braid.

You come to Athens with me, we fish with Carolina rigs with the exact same bait and same weight, I use flouro, you use braid, I will catch 18 fish to your two.

Lighter braids will snap from impact because they don't stretch. This becomes a big deal as you get closer. Within 10 yards, I cannot do a full hookset with 30lb braid without it snapping. 50lb braid will get into the drag. Using a leader allows the needed stretch to stop the braid from snapping.

I say always use a leader unless there is no choice. My experience has been that the person using a clear line will out catch a person using straight braid. I have to be fishing some pretty dense mats or in lily pads before I will ever go to straight braid.

Yes it matters. You'll still catch some with straight braid, you'll catch more with a mono or fluoro leader regardless of water clarity (more dramatic difference in clear water).

I have 65lb braid on 6 rods. Never have figured out why people put a leader on it.

To catch more fish, that's why.
