This is my first time on the forum, so, Hi all! hi

We've lived on this property for 4 years and this is my first time fishing the pond. It's small, but so far I have a fun little catch-and-release self-made program.

So, I pulled this little one (7-8") out and figured you all would know what it is. It seems this is all I have in there, at least what I'm pulling out with my first-time tied Texas Rig.

So, help me identify what this is.

I love this Texas rig, BTW. No snagging on the water vegetation and even when I've caught an overhanging branch, it has come right off.

I look forward to hearing from you,

DIAMOND

welcome

The fish appears to be a green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus). They are common in ponds in Texas. They are aggressive feeders and are caught on natural bait, lures, and flies.

I called them a rock bass when I would catch them in a pond I fished in my younger days

Sorry, I thought I was set up for this to let me know you replied.

The pond is north of Houston about 30 miles.

Not large by any stretch. Maybe 20-30 yards across.

Welcome to the forum Diamond. Sorry all, but that is not a warmouth or a rock bass; thats a green sunfish. Very aggressive fish, will eat whatever it can get into that big mouth. Once caught one on a full size zara spook. Also very aggressive breeders, will hybridize with whatever other sunfish is available if they can't find enough of their own kind. They can get fairly large but not huge; anything over 1lb is a big greenie. If you have young kids or grandkids, they are a great fish for them to learn how to detect bites when throwing lures because of their aggression. Also, for some reason they are great catfish bait, flatties especially love them. When fishing side by side, I've had 2:1 hits on greens vs bluegill. Not much of a food fish, their meat is soft compared to a bluegill or redear, but lots of fun to catch. Have fun with your new discovery.
