Anybody been on Athens? Fish in beds yet? Looking to take my son sight fishing. TIA, Warren

ATHENS — Water level is 5 inches high and clear. Water temp in the mid- 50s.

Fishing guide Jim Brack says bass fishing has been slow. A few fish reported shallow around 8-10 foot grass lines, hitting light Texas rigs. Crappie are gravitating towards the shallows and scattered, hitting small jigs.

I was on the lake Friday [3/6] scouting crappie. Caught a few shallow so it seems they are moving up. I also caught a few small LMB on the small crappie rig, but I lost one nice large mouth. She came up out of the water and spit that little jig back at me. Those crappie jigs just are big enough to handle a fish like that. It was fun while it lasted!! Also put one nice sand bass in the boat. Turned them all back to the lake. I had one fish hit my line and bent the rod over double, the fish broke the line smooth off at the jig. I never saw that one. Would sure like to have at least got to see it. So if you go and catch something with a 1/16 jig and a little purple tube jig in its mouth, send me a pic!! Hope the helps.

I've been twice in the past 2 weeks and only caught 2 bass when I went. Didn't see any on beds. I think this weather has them messed up. Cold then warm then cold and rainy.
