Fished alone 29 fish
‘Soaking shad’
Launched out of Rogers about 4:45am. I haven’t caught bait here in months and wasn’t sure what to expect. Around 5:15am I was was slow cruising to my fishing areas with a full bait tank of medium and large threadfin shad. Large being 5.5-6.5”. Big ones in this springs crop for sure! 3 throws of the net this morning.
I planned to fish 2 areas today - I know the fish are there this time of year, but my ‘areas’ are rather large and to be honest I didn’t cover as much area as I wanted to.
First stop - still dark - 22’. They were swimming by, but showing no interest. About 6:40 as it was starting to get brighter the first rod goes off. Short hybrid. Second goes 5lb largemouth........caught one keeper hybrid here, but mostly shorts. As the sun rose I started progressing deeper. Made it out to about 38’ before I picked up and moved areas.
White bass were readily available, but not the game I wanted to play today. Today was live bait chasing hybrid stripers (white bass littered the bottom everywhere I went- mostly 1st year 8” fish. Caught a few just to make sure I could😉)
2nd area - fished deeper waters 34-53’. Caught much bigger fish out deeper.
Smaller shad got more action then the jumbo threadfin.....I kind of expected that since every fish on every lake I fish has been spitting up 1” shad.
Cut shad caught hybrids also.
I saw no schools of hybrids today, only 1-2 would swim through at a time. Even the white bass schools seemed smaller than normal
Water temp is 57
Things haven’t turned on yet ..... but very very soon - one more cold night and then we really start to warm up.
Biggest hybrid was 7.25lbs today. All hybrids were very healthy looking.
All fish released
